By Roman Chertes

The internet has created thousands of new career opportunities in a variety of fields, including education. Online teaching jobs are a popular option for graduates, career educators and others with specialist knowledge to share with learners. If you are one of those people, it may have appealed to you because of the flexible hours it potentially allows. So - are you going to turn your online teaching jobs into a full-time occupation? Or is part-time more practical for you?

If you're in doubt, then it's a good idea to start taking on online tutoring jobs part-time to start with, before ditching your day job, unless you know what to expect. There are several reasons for going ahead cautiously, no matter how appealing the idea of working online tutoring jobs from home full-time.

Time. If you don't have experience of online tutoring jobs, you may think that twenty lessons a week sounds practical. In reality, you may have to spend a considerable amount of time on allied tasks and activities. These additional tasks include administration, designing individualized lesson or tutorial plans, and developing resources to use in your online teaching jobs. Because the field is growing and changing, you will probably need to spend some time keeping up with developments, new tools and new educational research and ideas.

Don't forget to build in troubleshooting time. Even the most reliable computers and internet connections play up from time to time. One day offline and you could find yourself with a backlog or significant loss of earnings, or both.

Working environment. Working from home may sound idyllic, especially if you're used to time-consuming and stressful commuting. Bear in mind that working from home is too solitary for some people. You may be able to find a compromise, but before you commit yourself to full-time online teaching jobs, it makes sense to see how you enjoy the working conditions.

Demand. Is there a real demand for the particular service that you want to offer? Depending on what you are able to provide, you may find yourself in competition with a lot of other people who've also opted for online teaching jobs. Or, if you aim to teach an unusual subject, can you make a go of it full-time? Though online teaching jobs have hugely widened the market, with potential students all over the world, if your subject is not in huge demand, you could still struggle to make it as full-time service provider. It's worth testing the water first.

Pin money or pension? If you want to make a career of your online teaching jobs, it's worthwhile seeing how much you can actually earn. If you're working for yourself, you need good business and financial planning skills. You have been warned!

It's possible to make a rewarding full-time career from your online teaching jobs, but it's not something you should leap into in an outburst of enthusiasm. If you've got the skills, the commitment and the determination, becoming self-employed could be the best decision you've ever made.
